Reading Response

Crowding and Leaping - Steering the Craft

I suck at crowding… and I suck at leaping. So this chapter was beneficial to me. It is very hard for me vomit everything up on the page, to get everything out at one time and then go back and edit out what is not really important. In fact, it’s nearly impossible. I edit myself before I get anything out on paper and I know it holds me back, especially when it comes to detail. Most of my prose writing is inside the mind of my characters, paying more attentions to their feelings and intentions rather than their surroundings. After reading the chapter, I know I need to break myself of my bad habit and allow myself to vomit up everything. I need to learn how to crowd when it comes to my character’s setting, appearance, and just vomit out everything… then go back and leap over what isn’t really needed. Basically Le Guin is talking about what Davidson and Fraser would call “expansion and contraction”… It’s exactly the same concept, just a different name!
