Reading Response

Steering the Craft - Chapter 9

I always thought of plot as the most important and most essential part of a story, never as merely a device or something that could be missing entirely. If the plot is bad, than it would not matter how good the characters were because the story would never be able to progress, or so I thought. Le Guin stated that characters, a conversation or even a place can help you find and continue a story... I never thought of it that way. When I start writing something I usually know exactly what is going to happen (besides what I tweak as I go), what happened before the story takes place, and I know all of the characters (even before they make an appearance). I have it all planned about before my fingers touch the keyboard. It never occurred to me that I could just start writing and not "know" everything, but I've decided I don't like writing that way. It makes me feel like I'm not in control of my own work. I hate writing without a purpose in mind. I'm sure it's limiting, but I can't help it.
